How Are Teams Balanced?
The tool uses a cryptographic shuffle (crypto.getRandomValues()) to randomise the order of
all names, then deals them round-robin into groups — the same way you'd deal cards from a shuffled deck.
This means every team gets as equal a number of members as possible. If names don't divide evenly, the
remainder is distributed one per team starting from Team 1.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How does the random team generator work?
It usescrypto.getRandomValues()to shuffle all names randomly, then distributes them round-robin — like dealing cards — into your chosen number of teams. Every name has an equal chance of landing in any team. -
Can I get teams of equal size?
Yes. Teams are always as equal as possible. If your names don't divide evenly, the extra names are spread one per team from the top — so teams differ by at most one member. -
Is there a limit to how many names I can enter?
There is no hard limit. The tool handles hundreds of names easily. For very large lists, we recommend copying the team outputs using the per-team copy buttons. -
Can I save my teams?
The tool does not save teams to a server. Use the copy button on each team card to copy that team's names to your clipboard, then paste into a document or spreadsheet to save them. -
What's the maximum team size?
There is no maximum team size. You choose how many teams to split into (e.g. 2, 3, 4). Each team gets roughly the same number of names; the tool distributes everyone as evenly as possible. -
Can I use this for classroom groups?
Yes. It's ideal for PE class, group projects, or any activity where you need to split students into random, fair teams quickly. Paste your class list and choose the number of groups.
