Random Letter Generator — Pick Any Letter A–Z

Our free random letter picker instantly selects a letter from the English alphabet. Choose from the full A–Z pool, vowels only (A, E, I, O, U), or consonants only. You can generate up to 20 letters in one go, with or without repeats — perfect for a wide variety of games, puzzles, and creative activities.

What Can You Use It For?

Random Vowel Generator

Use the Vowels tab to pick only A, E, I, O, or U. A random vowel generator is ideal for rhyme schemes and poetry (picking a vowel to anchor a stanza), ESL and phonics drills (practicing vowel sounds in isolation), and word games where you need to build words around a given vowel. Teachers often use it for alphabet and pronunciation exercises.

Random Consonant Generator

Switch to the Consonants tab to draw only from B through Z (excluding A, E, I, O, U). A random consonant generator is useful for Scrabble practice (high-value consonants like J, Q, X, Z), phonics and spelling (consonant blends, silent letters), and games that restrict answers to consonant-heavy words. It's also handy when you want to avoid vowels for a specific challenge.

Random Alphabet Generator

In A–Z mode, every letter from the English alphabet has an equal chance. Use a random alphabet generator for naming (projects, characters, teams — pick a letter as a creative seed), ordering and sorting (random letter to determine sequence or bracket order), and bracket seeding (assign letters to participants or matchups fairly). Generate multiple letters with "No repeat letters" for a full random permutation of the alphabet.

Game Mode: Scattergories & Stop

In Scattergories, each round uses one random letter. Players have a set time to write answers that start with that letter in different categories (e.g. "Animals", "Countries"). In the classic game, the letter is rolled on a 20-sided die, so some letters are excluded: Q, U, V, X, Y, and Z are often left out because they are harder to find answers for. Our tool lets you use any letter pool — stick to the classic set or include all 26 for a harder game.

The board game Stop (also known as "Basta" or "Scattergories-style") uses the same idea: one letter per round, multiple categories. A typical game has 3 rounds. Use Generate 12 letters with No repeat letters to get one letter per round for a full 12-round session, or generate 3 letters for a shorter game.

How to Use

  1. Choose your letter pool: A–Z (all 26), Vowels (5), or Consonants (21).
  2. Set the quantity — how many letters to generate at once (up to 20).
  3. Toggle No repeat letters if you want each letter to appear at most once.
  4. Click Generate Letter.
  5. Use Copy to copy the result instantly.

Randomness & Fairness

Every letter is selected using crypto.getRandomValues() — the same cryptographically secure random number generator used in our other tools. This gives each letter in the chosen pool an exactly equal probability on every draw. Unlike a standard letter die (which typically only has ~20 sides and thus skips some letters), our generator covers all 26 letters with perfect uniformity.
