Random Letter Generator
Pick a random letter from the alphabet. Perfect for Scattergories, word games, and creative prompts.
Random Letter Generator — Pick Any Letter A–Z
Our free random letter picker instantly selects a letter from the English alphabet. Choose from the full A–Z pool, vowels only (A, E, I, O, U), or consonants only. You can generate up to 20 letters in one go, with or without repeats — perfect for a wide variety of games, puzzles, and creative activities.
What Can You Use It For?
- Scattergories — the most popular use. Pick the starting letter for each round instantly instead of rolling a physical die.
- Shiritori & word chain games — generate a random starting letter for the first player.
- Creative writing prompts — challenge yourself to write a story, character name, or plot point starting with the generated letter.
- Naming projects or teams — use a random letter as a creative seed for a project codename.
- Teaching the alphabet — generate random letters for flashcard practice, spelling games, or phonics drills.
- Boggle-style games — generate a random set of letters to see what words you can form.
Game Mode: Scattergories & Stop
In Scattergories, each round uses one random letter. Players have a set time to write answers that start with that letter in different categories (e.g. "Animals", "Countries"). In the classic game, the letter is rolled on a 20-sided die, so some letters are excluded: Q, U, V, X, Y, and Z are often left out because they are harder to find answers for. Our tool lets you use any letter pool — stick to the classic set or include all 26 for a harder game.
The board game Stop (also known as "Basta" or "Scattergories-style") uses the same idea: one letter per round, multiple categories. A typical game has 3 rounds. Use Generate 12 letters with No repeat letters to get one letter per round for a full 12-round session, or generate 3 letters for a shorter game.
How to Use
- Choose your letter pool: A–Z (all 26), Vowels (5), or Consonants (21).
- Set the quantity — how many letters to generate at once (up to 20).
- Toggle No repeat letters if you want each letter to appear at most once.
- Click Generate Letter.
- Use Copy to copy the result instantly.
Randomness & Fairness
Every letter is selected using crypto.getRandomValues() — the same cryptographically secure
random number generator used in our other tools. This gives each letter in the chosen pool an exactly
equal probability on every draw. Unlike a standard letter die (which typically only has ~20 sides and
thus skips some letters), our generator covers all 26 letters with perfect uniformity.
