4d6 Drop Lowest: The Mathematics of D&D Ability Scores
In Dungeons & Dragons, character creation sets the foundation for everything your hero will do. And the gold standard for rolling is the 4d6 drop lowest method.
What is 4d6 Drop Lowest?
The process is simple: roll four six-sided dice (d6), remove the single die showing the lowest number, and add the remaining three together. You repeat this process six times to generate the six core ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma).
For example, if you roll a 5, 4, 6, and 2, you drop the 2. The remaining 5 + 4 + 6 equals an ability score of 15. In standard notation, this roll is written as 4d6dl or 4d6d1.
The Mathematics: Why Not Just Roll 3d6?
In older editions of D&D, the rule was literally "roll 3d6 down the line." Rolling three d6 gives a bell curve of possibilities from 3 to 18, with an exact mathematical average of 10.5. A stat block generated this way creates extremely average characters, with a fairly high chance of generating a negative modifier (a score of 9 or below) in your primary stat.
Introducing the fourth die and dropping the lowest mathematically shifts the entire bell curve upward. Instead of an average of 10.5, the average of 4d6 drop lowest is roughly 12.24.

Why DMs Prefer It
The 4d6 method strikes a balance between the fun, unpredictable nature of rolling dice and the mechanical reality of modern D&D. Characters need to feel heroic. Having a primary stat start at a 15 or 16 gives characters the mechanical competence expected at Level 1, while still leaving room for a very low "dump stat" (like an 8 or 9) which provides excellent roleplaying opportunities.
The "Standard Array" Comparison
The Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) adds up to a total of 72. If you roll 4d6 drop lowest six times, the mathematical average of all six scores added together is 73.44. This proves why 4d6dl feels so much like the standard array, but with the added excitement of potentially rolling an 18 or a 5.
